What’s on the other side, when we die? It’s a debate that can cause heated discussions, fueled by people who claim to have been to that other side – and come back. However, tobacconist Guifré Galbó from Girona in Catalonia gained worldwide fame in occult circles a few years back when he took things quite a few steps further. Guifré claimed to have been to hell, from which he returned.

According to him, the story goes that Girona was hit by a tremor, while Guifré was at work in his tobacco store. A huge box of Cuban cigars had apparently fallen from a high shelf and made an impact on the unfortunate tobacconist’s skull. Gaining consciousness Guifré found himself engulfed in the most horrible sea of flames, and he had no doubt that he had ended up in the fires of hell. Being a devout Catholic with only a few missteps in his life – Mercé was her name – he felt that he had been treated very unfairly.

And according to the story he since told, he demanded to see the person in charge, explained the profound unreasonableness of the situation and suddenly returned to consciousness, lying on the floor of his tobacco store surrounded by paramedics. Today Guifré Galbó runs his own congregation, named ‘Hellfire & Damnation’ because that’s exactly what he preaches. And he claims to know what he’s talking about – being the only person who has gone to hell and come back
